“We understand this political climate has turned your world upside down, […] Underground shelter is your best defense against radioactive fallout.” the TV-ad voice-over tells you at the beginning of the new film directed by Celia Rowlson-Hall for Miu Miu Women’s Tales, the acclaimed short-film series by women critically celebrate femininity of our century. The director, as she states, explored commercialism in the face of fear, creating a spectacle to distract and entertain, an escape from our present day reality.
The story takes place during Cold War period in a Las Vegas nuclear bunker shaped into a picturesque family home, designed to survive a nuclear war for a year. The characters slowly come apart as the cataclysmic event above ground take their toll below. This community can no longer sustain the Hollywood musical illusion. A new reality breeds chaos and confusion. The spirit of the film takes inspiration from how the director thinks of Miu Miu FW17 collection: “elastic, grounded, sensitive and risk taking.”
