|“The inspiration for Nightwalk,” reveals director Małgorzata Szumowska, “was given to me by my friend Filip Rutkowski, who is non-binary and expresses his identity by wearing women’s clothes […]”. Nightwalk is the nineteenth short film commissioned by Miu Miu for Women’s Tales – an acclaimed series that invites filmmakers to investigate the concepts of femininity in the 21st century.
The short is set in Warsaw. In a first home, a father watches sports while lying on the sofa, expecting his son to do the same. In another apartment, a mother sits down to dine with her daughter. At the same time, the boy and the girl embark on a nighttime adventure of transformation, during which they strip off the various gender stratifications they have inherited and the city streets are transformed into a liberating catwalk.
Not only director but also screenwriter and producer, Szumowska has been chosen by the brand to play this latest edition – thanks to various projects including her latest one, Wonder, with which she explores what defines and divides men and women in different cultures around the world. In fact, she states “it is possible to use fashion to do something important, in support of women and in favour of tolerance”.
