Amiamo le bellezze rare provenienti da tutto il mondo, rendendole le nostre ispiratrici. Per questo numero speciale di Muse, la bellezza sudafricana Candice Swanepoel, è la musa dell’estate in esclusiva per noi.

AM  Sei cresciuta in Sudafrica, nella provincia di KwaZulu-Natal. Hai qualche ricordo di infanzia che ti è particolarmente caro? CS  Sono cresciuta in una fattoria e ogni giorno era un’avventura. Passavo le giornate a tosare pecore, mungere mucche e sguazzare nel lago. Seguivo mio padre, mio fratello e i miei cugini nel podere e cercavo di fare del mio meglio per diventare come loro. Costruivamo piccole fortezze, andavamo a pescare granchi e ne combinavamo di tutti i colori. A volte ho come la sensazione di essermi sognata tutto.  

AM Come sei stata scoperta? CS  Un uomo di nome Kevin Ellis mi ha vista ad un mercatino delle pulci, in Sudafrica. È stato un attimo, qualcosa come cinque secondi in cui mi ha vista passare. È proprio vero che basta un momento per cambiarti la vita.

AM Qual è l’aspetto più difficile della tua carriera di modella?CS   Riuscire a non perdere mai la motivazione, costi quel che costi. Ho imparato molto di me stessa in questo viaggio, e sono una tipa tosta, credimi.

AM Quali sono i tuoi stilisti preferiti? CS  Stella Mcartney, Balmain, Balenciaga, Prabal Gurung, Rag & Bone, Tom Ford e Celine.

AM Chi sono le tue icone/modelli di riferimento? CS  Gisele Bündchen è sempre stata per me un esempio da seguire, sia come persona che sul lavoro. Laetitia Casta, per la sua bellezza naturale. Tendo a guardare anche alle icone di un tempo, come Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Karen Mulder...

AM  Quale location ti è piaciuta di più finora? CS  Grazie al cielo mi piace viaggiare altrimenti a quest’ora sarei già impazzita. Il Brasile è in assoluto il mio posto preferito al mondo. Una sferzata di pura energia. Se non avessi fatto la modella forse non avrei mai avuto occasione di andarci, quindi sono estremamente grata per questo. Adoro anche Tulum, Miami, Bora Bora e St. Barts, i tropici insomma. Amo il caldo. Mi fa sentire a casa.

AM  Secondo te dove sta la differenza tra alta moda e prêt-à-porter, due mondi che conosci personalmente.
CS  Mi piacciono entrambi in egual misura, ma c’è una netta differenza. Ci sono tanti soldi in gioco nel settore di questi tempi. Ho la sensazione che in passato ci fosse molta più libertà. Sono felice di aver avuto modo di provvedere a me stessa economicamente, sono fiera del mio lavoro e faccio alta moda e progetti creativi. Credo ci sia il momento giusto per ogni cosa.  

AM  Ti è piaciuto collaborare con Muse? CS  È stato uno dei progetti più gratificanti che abbia mai fatto. È un grande onore poter fare un intero numero. I fotografi sono stati grandiosi ed è stato molto divertente lavorare insieme. Mi piace interpretare ruoli diversi, e ogni fotografo aveva un personaggio e una storia diversa per me.

AM  Parlami dei tuoi obiettivi futuri nel lavoro.CS  Ho raggiunto e superato tutti gli obiettivi professionali che mi ero prefissata. Spero di poter continuare a lavorare con persone da cui traggo ispirazione e che a loro volta traggono ispirazione da me. Finché ci sarà da mettersi in gioco, sarò felice.  

AM  Per quali progetti futuri ti senti più entusiasta? CS  Questo! :) 

We love the rare beauties from all over the world; we look at them like women of inspiration. For this special issue, South African beauty, Candice Swanepoel, is the summer muse, an eclusive for us. She brings an alluring and angelic presence to everything that she does, making her one of the top models in the world.

AM  Growing up in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, what are some of your favorite childhood memories?CS  I grew up on a farm so every day was an adventure. Sheering the sheep, milking the cows and swimming in the lakes was part of everyday life. I used to follow my dad, brother and cousins around the farm trying my best to be one of the boys. We used to build forts, go crab fishing and get into all sorts of mischief. It all seems like it was something I dreamt up one night.

AM  How were you discovered? CS  I was scouted by a man named Kevin Ellis at a flea market in South Africa. He had about five seconds to see me walk past from inside a stable. It just shows how one moment in time can totally change your life.

AM  What has been the most challenging part of your career as a model?CS  Staying motivated no matter how hard it gets is difficult. I have learned so much about myself in this journey, and I am one tough cookie - let me tell you.

AM  Do you have any favorite designers?CS  Stella Mcartney, Balmain, Balenciaga, PrabalGurung, Rag and bone, Tom Ford, Celine  

AM  Who are your icons/role models?CS  Gisele Bündchenhas always been an inspiration and role model as a person and as a business woman. LaetitiaCasta for her natural beauty. I tend to look up to older icons like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Karen Mulder...

AM  You are always traveling, what has been your favorite location thus far?CS  Thank God I love traveling or I would have gone mad by now. Brazil is my absolute favorite place in the world. I feel so alive when I’m there. If I didn’t model I’m sure life wouldn’t have taken me there, so I’m grateful for that. I also love Tulum, Miami, Bora Bora and St Barts - all of the tropical places. I love hot weather and humidity. I instantly feel at home following the sun.

AM  Being involved in both high and mainstream fashion, what would you say is the biggest difference? CS  I enjoy doing both equally, but there is a definite difference. There is so much money at stake in the industry these days. I feel like people used to have a lot more freedom to play. I’m happy I’ve had the chance to look after myself financially and be confident in my work and then do high fashion and creative projects. There is a perfect time for everything, I believe.

AM  How have you enjoyed this collaboration with Muse? CS  It has been one of the most rewarding projects I’ve done so far. It’s such an honor to be asked to do the entire issue. The photographers were all unique and fun to work with. I love being able to play a character when I work, and each photographer had a different person and story planned for me. It’s been interesting to see how differently they perceive me.

AM  What are some future goals for your career? CS  I have reached and exceeded all of the goals I had set professionally. I hope to keep working with people who inspire me and who are inspired by me. As long as I’m always challenged I will be happy.

AM  What upcoming projects are you most excited about? CS  This one! :)
